Opportunities and Techniques of a Full-Lifecycle Risk-Based Test Approach
29 October 2008 / 9.00 – 5.00 h / Cliftons Canberra
Tony Brown - K. J. Ross Associates (AU)

Risk-based testing is widely regraded as ‘best practice’ within software testing as a method for prioritising tests to ensure that the most important tests are executed first; but to implement a risk-based methodology only as far as test prioritisation vastly undermines some of the most powerful advantages available to risk-based assessment, and provides a far better return on investment for performing the risk analysis in the first place.

If risk-based testing principles are leveraged correctly it provides the testing practitioner an infra-structure in which all aspects of test strategy, design and management can be conducted.

A risk-based approach should not just remain within the remit of testing; indeed we should share our knowledge, principles and techniques with the whole project team and allow project managers, development teams and system integrators the allow the significant opportunities for efficiency and effectiveness to infuse throughout the project and organisation.

This tutorial introduces the various opportunities and techniques associated with a full-lifecycle, risk-based approach. Practical sessions will work through formal methods for identifying risks and developing a strategy in-line with IEEE standards. Additional sessions will reinforce how to implement and infuse a risk-based methodology throughout the development lifecycle from requirements elicitation through to reporting and sign-off.
