T1 Lean Topics, Agile Projects, Agile & Lean Organisations
Brian Swain - Takt-Group
Wayne Mallinson - Test and Data Services

Brian Swain and Wayne Mallinson lead this tutorial in an interactive style.

The tutorial kicks off with a neutral (non-IT) lean simulation exercise that will allow delegates to construct meaningful analogies for our industry of testing and IT. This hands-on opportunity provides experiential learning that can be applied by delegates to their own projects, processes, and organisational circum-stances.

We discover how test project management can benefit from controlling the flow of information, by ensuring product readiness for test, and therefore meet time lines and even significantly reduce effort and timeframes while simultaneously improving quality. In this process the simple tool of a check sheet for handover is used to remove wasted time resulting from incompleteness and later rework.

The tutorial takes an in-depth view of a few lean tools and techniques, rather than a grand tour of all things lean. Generic lean processes such as value stream mapping, lean project management, 7 wastes, 5 whys, lean problem solving, standard work and others are taught, and then applied to testing and related project elements.

A lean approach to the project management of testing is devised, with Brian and Wayne facilitating delegate discovery as they consider their own particular testing circumstances on the one hand or generic testing scenarios on the other hand.

Testing as a discipline is examined during the tutorial, and patterns from the different types of testing and from test management are explored for advantages that can be gained from applying lean processes and tools.

Hand-out notes and exercises are provided to assist delegates assimilate key learning points, and to apply lean tools and thinking with confidence.

To maintain quality, this practical and interactive tutorial is restricted to the first 24 persons to reserve places and is led by two facilitators each with 20 years hands-on experience in their respective specialties of lean and testing.
